He was a renowned painter, calligrapher, and sculptor.

Style: Kobudō: Yaribō. (Staff used as a spear considered the origin of Bōjutsu).


蔡 肇功(湖城)親方

A government official of Kume, and “Official of Almanacs.”
The Kugusuku family name was originally the Sai (蔡) family and is one of the original 36 Chinese families that came to Okinawa in 1372. The families were from the valley of the Min River in Fujian Province, China. The 36 families established themselves in Kumemura, Naha.

There is plenty of evidence to suggest that Kūshankū was Quán Kuí. Quán Kuí was a Chinese diplomat who led the 1756-1757 Chinese investiture mission to the Kingdom of Ryūkyū. Evidently, several members of the mission had started fights while in Ryūkyū. He “demonstrated” some martial arts techniques described as Kumiai-jutsu 組合術, where he grabbed the lapel of his opponent and scissored his opponent’s legs.
Styles: Some type of grappling described as “Kumiai-jutsu 組合術 like the Kenpo of the Bubishi.”

In 1922 he demonstrated karate at the Kodokan, and for the Exercise and Physical Education Exhibition at Tokyo Women’s Teachers College.
He was awarded the title of Tasshi from the Butokukai in 1943.
